It began in 1985 when Chris Alvarado was heavily involved in the SLC Punk scene and picked up his first bass guitar. Alvarado has been involved in a multitude of projects in the last few years, but recently has cultivated his projects Twilight Transmissions and Roses & Exile. The significant difference between the two is Twilight Transmissions being purely instrumental and Roses and Exile featuring guest vocalists with lyrics Alvarado wrote nearly 13 years ago. The two projects were once a single project in the early 90’s that were put onto analog 4-track for the sake of experimenting with musical noise concepts. “That was an old idea that pushed Twilight Transmissions and Roses & Exile to where they are now.”
The concept behind Twilight Transmissions and Roses & Exile can be described as “anxiety ridden movie soundtracks to the emotional response from gazing into a cloud covered night sky in the middle of January.” Influences for Alvarado come from the dark sounds of Death in June, Throbbing Gristle, Einstuerzende Neubauten, Zoviet France and Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. The sound of Alvarados creations lies not in one particular genre, but weaves components from tribal, ambient, electronica and rhythm noise. The listener can experience and learn something new upon each listen of either project.
The concept of Twilight Transmissions is “warping the senses into a dream-like state. There isn’t a specific message except to alter the sense of being and awareness. Roses & Exile focuses on the “dark relationships between people whether it is love or just of being aware of someone else’s state of mind and relating to that.”
Alvarado’s has a diverse musical background with bands ranging from punk to reggae and rock to folk. Some of the bands include Salt Lake collaborations, Harsh Reality, B.F.D., Genocidal Existence Horror Show, Shiv, Beat Iron Blue, Black Hole, 23 Extacy and Void to name a few. Alvarado’s two years of classical guitar training at the University of Utah helped pave the path he is on now. Alvarado has created music with over 150 musicians.
